Occasionally, I have received requests for checklists of Lake Malawi's fishes in readily printable form. In response to a 1999 request from the World Wildlife Fund, I prepared the initial version of the cichlid checklist in the Acrobat file below. This includes all cichlid species living in Lake Malawi ("Haps," Mbuna, and nonendemics such as Astatotilapia calliptera, shown above) that are currently recognized as valid, scientifically named and described species. Known forms that have not yet been given scientific names are not listed. (For the Web version of the checklists for the Mbuna and for the other endemic "haps" of Lake Malawi, complete with many links to photos, please see the links on this site's main page.) A checklist of Lake Malawi's noncichlid fishes is available. There is now also a checklist of the invertebrates of Lake Malawi.

I post updated versions of this checklist as new genera and species are described or as the classification changes.
