Not quite all the haplochromines in Lake Malawi are endemic to the lake, having evolved within it and found only there; only almost all of them! Three exceptional, widely distributed species are listed below. One of them, the Pseudocrenilabrus, has only recently been alleged to occur in Lake Malawi, but I know of no evidence that it actually does. (Click on the genus and species to go to the page for that fish, or click the author and year to go to the bibliographic citation for the original scientific description of the species.)

  1. Astatotilapia Pellegrin, 1904
  2. Pseudocrenilabrus Fowler, 1934
  3. Serranochromis Regan, 1920
