The holotype of Placidochromis stonemani, a fish of unreported
sex but possibly male (48.1 mm SL; USNM 210697), trawled off
Monkey Bay, Malawi in 43 fathoms. Photo by Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, from
Fig. 6 of Burgess & Axelrod (1973);
reproduced with the permission of T.F.H. Publications, Inc.
This small species was originally placed in the genus Haplochromis.
The genus Placidochromis as currently defined seems like an artificial assemblage
of very different fishes that happen to share a primitive color pattern of vertical bars.
