Pseudotropheus tursiops, types, photo by Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod

Pseudotropheus `tursiops mbenji,` photo from Ribbink et al. (1983)

Upper photo: Pseudotropheus tursiops, paratype (upper fish, USNM 214705, said to be a female 69.4 mm SL) and holotype (lower fish, USNM 214704, said to be a male 86.2 mm SL). Type locality given merely as "Lake Malawi" [possibly collected at Chisumulu Island?]. From the horizontal stripes and absence of vertical bars, M. K. Oliver suspects this species belongs in the genus Melanochromis. Photo by H. R. Axelrod, reproduced with the permission of T.F.H. Publications, Inc., from Burgess & Axelrod (1975). Lower photo: Pseudotropheus "tursiops mbenji," a separate species resembling P. tursiops in shape but apparently a true (and still unnamed) Pseudotropheus species; photographed underwater at Mbenji Island. From Plate 8b of Ribbink et al., 1983; reproduced by permission of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa.
