The holotype of Melanochromis heterochromis (Penn State University 2562, an adult male 83.0 mm SL from Chinyamwezi Island), drawn by M. Katz. The type specimens of this species came from seven widely separated locations: Chinyamwezi, Chinyankwazi, Domwe, Thumbi East, and Mumbo Islands, Mitande Rocks, and Zimbawe Rock.
