This primarily deep-water, possibly predatory species
was described under the name Placidochromis macrognathus by
Hanssens (2004). It is
trawled in the southeast arm of Lake Malawi in small numbers
(see Turner, 1996: 119), but also occurs in the
central part of the lake (Lukoma Bay, Tanzania; Chiwanga Bay, Mozambique).
Hanssens (2004) notes that this species has a remarkably wide depth range,
occurring in as little as 5 m (16 feet) of water, and down to 126 m (413 feet).
