Colour variation which distinguishes between allopatric populations of Pseudocrenilabrus
philander is described here as a basis for, and to stimulate, further work on morphology,
genetics, ecology, zoogeography and behaviour: Collectively, these studies should ultimately
lead to confident categorisations of the Pseudocrenilabrus taxa and to an improved
understanding of cichlid evolution. At present there are clear indications of differentiation,
suggesting that incipient speciation is in progress and that some taxa might be considered to
be distinct species.
