In 1989, Eccles and Trewavas defined a new cichlid genus Maravichromis from
Lake Malawi. One of the species included is Chromis lateristriga Günther, 1864.
This species was designated by Regan (1920) as the type species of Mylochromis, a genus
later synonymized with Haplochromis (Regan, 1922). As a consequence of the removal
of lateristriga from the genus Haplochromis by Eccles and Trewavas (1989),
the name Mylochromis, being the oldest name available, takes priority over
Maravichromis, which consequently becomes a junior subjective synonym of
Mylochromis.
