Taeniochromis holotaenia is the only member of its genus, and was named for the continuous dark band that runs from the snout along the midline of the body to the base of the caudal fin. This elongate predatory denizen of sandy shores and offshore areas in Lake Malawi eats small cichlids and other fishes. Special thanks to Mark Smith for providing the photograph of the male.
Photos by Frank Panis of a brightly colored male and a female can be seen at Malawi Cichlid Homepage.
