Copadichromis chrysonotus, breeding male; photo by M.K. Oliver

This magnificent fish is Copadichromis chrysonotus, a breeding male showing the characteristic white dorsal fin and pale nuchal blaze (stripe down the front of the head). Like other "utaka," this species shoals in midwater and feeds on zooplankton with its protrusible, tubelike mouth. This is one of the photos I took at Monkey Bay on my first trip to Malawi, in 1968.
