Occasionally, I have received requests for checklists of Lake Malawi's fishes in readily printable form. In response to a request from the World Wildlife Fund, I prepared the initial version of the cichlid checklist in the Acrobat file below. This includes all cichlid species living in Lake Malawi ("Haps," Mbuna, and nonendemics such as Astatotilapia calliptera, shown above) that are currently recognized as valid species. Known forms that have not yet been given valid scientific names are excluded. (For the Web version of the checklists for the two endemic species flocks, complete with many links to photos, please see the links on this site's main page.)

It is my intention to post updated versions of this checklist as new genera and species are described or as the classification changes. I also expect to post a checklist of Lake Malawi's noncichlid fishes (already available as a Web page).
