A deep-water cichlid in the genus Cyrtocara is described from Lake Malawi, Africa.
The appearance of the fish is dominated by an unusual ventral protuberance below the posterior
part of the head. This protuberance is caused by the elongated tips of the cleithrum. We
hypothesize that this species is most closely related to a group of undescribed deep water forms
tentatively placed in the genus Trematocranus.
