A morphological and osteological study on a large number of specimens, together with
zoogeographical data, indicate that the genus Bathyclarias, previously synonymized with
the genus Dinotopterus, is a valid genus. It is rehabilitated in this paper.
Bathyclarias is endemic to Lake Malawi, while Dinotopterus is confined to
Lake Tanganyika.
