Maylandia emmiltos, photo from Ribbink et al. (1983); used by permission

Maylandia emmiltos, photographed underwater at Mpanga Rocks, off Chilumba, Malawi. This is the species formerly known informally as Pseudotropheus "zebra mpanga." There are now three other named "red-top zebra" species, Maylandia pyrsonotos, M. sandaracinos, and M. thapsinogen. They are so similar that, in order to tell them apart, one would need to know where in Lake Malawi they came from (if indeed they are real biological species, which seems doubtful). Photo from Plate 3a of Ribbink et al., 1983; reproduced by permission of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa.
